Brothel owners in Amsterdam's red light district filed a lawsuit against the city in connection with the decision to close several schools.

The council is demanding the end of year closure of 33 institutions - about a third of all brothels in the area of Amsterdam, reports the BBC Cu.

The prostitutes union says that the move will force many women to work illegally. The city council wants to attract to the problem banks, which could provide brothels concessional loans.

Brothel owners are ready to go to the highest court to save a third of the windows in the famous red light district.

Amsterdam's mayor Job Cohen, claims that many of the brothels are a front for criminal activity, such as women trafficking and money laundering.
